If you’re lucky enough to take on enough adventures in your RV, you’ll likely travel through areas and stop at a few destinations that don’t have the best (or have questionable) water quality. Still, when it’s the last RV stop for the next 120 miles, you have to make do. You can improve your RV water quality ahead of time to ensure you’re only using water that’s safe, even if you’re not sure.

At Leisure Coachworks, we offer full RV repair and maintenance services. If you have any questions or concerns about your RV’s water filtration or RV softener, reach out to us before your next trip.

Why You Need to Upgrade Your Water Filtration System in Your RV

Water filtration is a critical step in keeping yourself out of the local ER with gastro issues and to ensure that you’re not creating unsafe buildup in your appliances. RV water filtration typically needs to remove all harmful contaminants. That includes any type of sediment, bacteria, or chemicals that build up in water supports.

When you remove these, you protect your health, but your water also tastes better, and there’s less risk of damage to your equipment. So, how do you do it? There are two key areas to consider: Water filtration systems and water softener systems.

As always, check your owner’s manual for any specific RV filter replacement, upgrades, and maintenance (some RVs have some pretty specific steps to take).

Types of RV Water Filtration Systems

The following are some of the types of water filters you’ll find throughout your RV:

  • Inline filters: These filters will attach directly to the water hose. They are the simplest of options and are easy to use. The problem is, they don’t last and can be less beneficial over time, especially if you are traveling to multiple locations.
  • Canister filters: Your RV likely has some canister filters in place if it is more modern. This may be found, for example, under the sink or for the ice machine. They use activated carbon or sediment filters to remove debris from water as it travels through the filter to the faucet.
  • Reverse osmosis systems: You may want to upgrade to an RO system because of how effective it can be at removing more of the contaminants present. Though they are less commonly found in RVs due to their power requirements and more labor-intensive maintenance, these systems can provide a higher level of cleanliness when it matters to your family.

The quality of the filter matters. They should remove as much of the sediment and chlorine as possible from the water supply. You also need a solution that removes bacteria, viruses, pesticides, and heavy metals. It generally helps when they get rid of odors and bad tastes as well.

Is a RV Water Softener System Better for You?

Some RV water systems will use a water softener. The goal of this device is to remove the dissolved minerals that cause hard water to build up and clog pipes and appliances.

This is especially important with calcium and magnesium.

If you were at home, you would use a water softener if you were pulling water from a well that’s untreated. In an RV, you’ll want to seek out a softener if you’re more likely to be pulling water that’s not been treated as well.

Keep in mind that there are a few system options out there. Choose a water softener for your RV that fits it based on size and the amount of water you use. You also need to consider whether or not they require salt. Some newer systems no longer require salt to be added to the water softener.

We are consistently working with clients not just on RV repairs but also for custom RV upgrades, which can include the addition of more advanced water filtration systems. Should you install a portable water softener for your RV?

Because hard water has a high mineral content, it can be problematic for many RVs, and that is why having a water softener becomes critical. Mineral buildup, called scale, can be very damaging to the functionality of your RV’s water systems. As a result, if you know you are going to be using hard water, such as that from a well, it helps to have a water softener on board.

There are some drawbacks to an RV water softener. For example, you’ll need to keep it charged, meaning that the salt water solution is still high enough to remove the materials. It’s not hard to do, but it is one more component of RV maintenance to consider. It can also be one of the most frequently overlooked RV repairs.

When Should You Invest in RV Water Filtration

Many RVers who plan to be on the road consistently will benefit from improving their RV water filtration. That’s especially true when you’re visiting a wide range of RV destinations where water quality could be questionable. We encourage you to install an upgraded RV water filtration system that connects right to the city water hookup or a water spigot at your campground. It should be very easy to use and establish.

When you do, you’ll be able to choose a range of options. Some offer a cartridge-like filter (like you have in your home’s refrigerator).

These cost more but tend to be a reliable solution for easy maintenance.

If you are a full-time RVer or planning to be, it is certainly worth investing in an RV water filtration system. Here’s another important consideration – by upgrading to a water filtration system in your RV, you reduce the risk that sediment and buildup enter your appliances and build up on water lines – a critical overall factor.

The cost of installing a water filtration system is typically less than having to maintain and replace your toilet, faucets throughout your RV, the water heater, and the water pump. Plus, it’s hard to overlook the benefits of clean water for drinking, cooking, and even showering.
